Edmund Brown was born in 1916 (Newmarket Q3-1916 3B:799), the son of Sidney and Lavinia BROWN (née CURTIS). He was the nephew of Mrs T. Wells of Isleham. They have not been identified in the 1939 register |
He was killed during the retreat down the peninsular. The battalion were surrounded by the Japanese at Sengarang on25/26th January, after having left Batu Pahat and then been ordered to re take that town and hold for 2 days. From then on scattered parties of men managed to break out and reach Singapore, 70 miles away. 30 of the battalion were killed that day, and Edmund is one of only three who has a known grave, the rest are commemorated on the Singapore Memorial, which is in the cemetery at Kranji. |
